Functional planning and space allocation of cultural buildings and technical areas
Functional planning and space allocation for cultural buildings and technical areas Correct space allocation is essential for a well-functioning cultural building.
We assist in the early phase by assessing room programmes, placement and the relationship between functions in cultural buildings, schools, churches and conference or multipurpose halls. The goal is to ensure the correct functional connection between stage, audience areas, technical rooms and support spaces — considering operation, logistics and technical execution — so that the building achieves strong technical solutions, logical workflows and flexible use for audiences, technical staff and facility operations.
Our experience from theatre, concert, education and AV projects enables us to provide realistic recommendations for space requirements, heights, access and flexibility.

Our role
As consultants with experience in both stage-technical operations and engineering, we help ensure functional solutions in the early planning phase. We assess space requirements, room heights, access and sightlines, and ensure that technical functions such as stage, audience hall, control room and storage areas are correctly placed in relation to each other and to the overall building structure.
Typical deliverables
- Contributions to concept and feasibility studies
- Analysis of room programmes and functional needs
- Sketch plans and functional descriptions
- Coordination between audience areas, stage and operational zones
- Recommendation of technical room and working heights with infrastructure between production areas and stage spaces
- Assessment of logistics for load-in/load-out, operations and audience flow
- Mapping of space requirements for future use and flexibility
Key areas we focus on
- Stage spaces: dimensions, heights and access
- Audience hall: sightlines, acoustics and comfort
- Technical rooms: placement, size, environment and accessibility
- Support functions: storage, workshops and backstage areas
- Logistics: loading zones and flow for technical and operational work
Coordination and collaboration
We work closely with architects and other consultants to ensure that technical and functional needs are addressed early in the building and spatial design. Through interdisciplinary coordination, we secure a strong balance between aesthetics, function and operational efficiency.
When space planning is relevant
- In early-phase and concept development of new cultural buildings
- When renovating existing stages and multipurpose halls
- When room programmes must be evaluated against technical requirements
- In projects with high demands for flexibility and efficient space usage
Proper space planning results in better functionality, lower costs and safer operations. Through practical experience and technical insight, we contribute to buildings that work well for audiences, users and operations — today and in the future.
